A Shell toolkit for QEMU VM lifecycle management. It downloads, caches, and runs pre-configured QEMU disk images, compresses and publishes them to remote endpoints, automates bridge/TAP networking, supports ISO installs, and works on both Linux and macOS with appropriate hardware acceleration.
Qemu-Utils is a Server Factory toolkit for comprehensive QEMU virtualization management: automated VM image distribution and compression, local caching, bridge/TAP network configuration, ISO-based OS installation, and cross-platform (Linux/macOS) execution with hardware acceleration. Usable standalone or within Server Factory.
Qemu-Utils brings the discipline of artifact management — the way teams already treat build outputs and container images — to something usually left as a pile of ad-hoc qemu-system-* invocations: virtual machines. Like its Parallels sibling, it treats VM images as first-class distributable assets, matrices of systems used across development and testing, but targets the genuinely cross-platform QEMU backend. Its lifecycle closes the full loop: download and cache pre-configured QEMU disk images, retrieve them automatically from remote endpoints, keep separate local Compressed and Uncompressed caches so a large image is fetched once and spun up cheaply thereafter, and compress and publish images back to remote servers for the rest of the team. And because a VM nobody can reach is useless, it automates the part everyone dreads — the networking — managing bridge and TAP interfaces for VM connectivity automatically rather than leaving the operator to hand-craft it. It supports fresh OS installations from ISO images, and it is genuinely cross-platform — running on both Linux and macOS with appropriate hardware acceleration for each. Configuration and operation follow the same simple, script-driven Server Factory pattern, and the toolkit can be used as part of a larger Server Factory project or completely independently, per the org's decoupling philosophy. Its documentation is more complete than most of the smaller Server Factory repos (with sections for overview, features, requirements, quick start, configuration, usage, networking, troubleshooting, and architecture), reflecting its role as the primary VM-management path for Linux/QEMU environments. Together with Parallels-Utils it gives the Server Factory ecosystem VM image management across both macOS/Parallels and Linux-plus-macOS/QEMU virtualization.
The problem we set out to solve
Provisioning and testing across many OSes needs reproducible VMs, and raw QEMU is low-level and fiddly — especially networking and image distribution. Qemu-Utils wraps QEMU into a manageable toolkit so images and their networks are reproducible across machines.
